SA’s police ahead of target

first_img24 March 2006South Africa will exceed its target of increasing the number of police officers to 152 000 by April 2006.Safety and Security spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi told BuaNews on Thursday that his department managed to increase the number of police personnel to 152 236 ahead of the set target, as outlined in the department’s programme of action.Arrests, investigations upAs a result, Mulaudzi said the rate of case investigations and arrests had also increased.“The more police we get, the more we enhance the operational side of our work, which precisely intensifies our fight against crime,” he said.In August 2005 the total staff establishment in the South African Police Service (SAPS) was 148 113.Numbers to increaseThe programme of action states that a total of 11 000 new police recruits would be trained and be on the streets for the 2005/2006 financial year.Mulaudzi said the current number of police officers was expected to rise further to 156 000 by the end of this year and to 158 000 by 2007.By end of March 2008, SAPS anticipates having 165 850 police officers.“Current indications are that we will be able to meet these deadlines,” Mulaudzi said.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

SHO, subordinates suspended for thrashing man in U.P.

U.P. DGP O.P. Singh, who took cognisance of the matter after it was tweeted to him, on Monday also ordered that the errant policemen be put “behind bars” for the “crime against women”.However, the police are yet to ascertain the charges of rape.According to the FIR lodged by the husband of the victim at the Kurawali police station, the two were traveling to his sister’s house in Mainpuri to attend a function on the night of July 5 when an SUV intercepted his vehicle near Navin Mandi. The SUV overtook his bike and stopped in front of him, following which he too stopped due to fear, he claimed.Abducted at gunpointThe three persons, described as unidentified, then allegedly kidnapped the woman at gunpoint and drove away towards Etah.The husband alleged his wife was raped and dumped on a road in Etah. When he approached the police, they did not believe his story and instead thrashed him, blaming him for harassing his wife, said the husband. “They didn’t listen to what I had to say,” he said.Cash, jewellery lootedThe FIR also says the three persons robbed the victim of her jewellery and some cash.ASP Mainpuri Om Prakash Singh, however, said the medical reports were yet to ascertain charges of rape but added all angles are being probed. Seven BJP activists held for ransacking TMC leaders home

first_imgBalurghat: Seven BJP activists were arrested for their alleged involvement in ransacking a Trinamool leader’s house in Tarangapur, under Kaliaganj police station in North Dinajpur district.Trinamool leader Ashim Ghosh, whose residence was ransacked allegedly by the BJP activists, is the general secretary of the district.Police said the BJP workers were identified as Subrata Das, Dipak Roy, Batasu Deb Sharma, Dharani Deb Sharma, Nimai Debnath, Ramnath Mohanta and Gayanath Deb Sharma in court. All of them were remanded in jail custody.Police said the incident took place on Friday night, when the BJP activists had attacked Ghosh’s house with firearms and other weapons and ransacked it.
