We are currently in the middle of the boys’ basketball sectionals in the state of Indiana. Since we have had class basketball, a discussion continually arises about seeding the basketball teams not only in boys but girls as well. We all know that except for a few rare sectionals, attendance is way down. One way to ensure better crowds is to do our best to have the good teams play in the championship game. This would be the reason for seeding. Since we have destroyed the tradition of the open tournament, we might as well do away with the blind draw as well. The crowds around the state are already small so when you have the top two teams play the first game on Tuesday night you can bet only die-hard fans and parents will come to the remaining tourney games. With the power ratings that are completely computerized, the age-old bias selection would have little authenticity. The selection committee of the IHSAA would go to that power rating and pair the teams based on those numbers. Only in rare occasions would two teams have the same power rating. At one time I would have been totally opposed to this type of system, but now I can sure see merit in it. I wonder of the IHSAA would ever consider a seeded tourney?
