Pic by Joe Boland of Northwst Newspix. The brother of a Donegal man killed in an unprovoked street attack in Dublin has named his boat after his slain sibling.Well-known journalist Eugene Moloney, 55, died following the attack in Dublin in 2012.Trainee mechanic Gary Birch, 21, of Templeogue, Co Dublin, was jailed for five and a half years in 2013 with the last two years suspended. Now, in a touching tribute, victim Eugene’s beloved brother Sean has named his boat after his brother.Sean said “It’s a fitting way to remember Eugene because h is a Donegal man and he loved to be as free as a boat on the sea having adventures.”The boat, which is based at Fahan where Sean lives, has had the words ‘Eugene Philip Dublin’ painted on the side.Eugene, who began his journalism career at the Irish News in Belfast before moving to the Irish Independent, is now buried in Co Donegal. During his time at the Irish News he reported through some of the worst days of the Troubles in the 1970s and 1980s.Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Eugene’s killer Burch had drunk ten bottles of beer and a couple of shots when he punched his victim in the head. After the verdict Moloney’s brother Sean urged an overhaul of prison sentences for violent attacks. He said Irish society needed to look at the much too lenient sentences given for unprovoked street attacks, while parents needed to check their attitude to children’s behaviour.Sean rests on board the ‘Eugene Philip’‘It can’t go on. It’s neither fair nor right,’ he said. ‘We came here today to get justice for Eugene and the judge did her very best. She was clearly moved. ‘When you looked at the other family you realise just what a sorry day it is for both families. Insofar as no amount of justice will bring our brother back, the other man’s life is ruined.’DONEGAL MAN’S TOUCHING TRIBUTE AS HE NAMES BOAT AFTER SLAIN BROTHER was last modified: June 29th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:donegaldublinEugene MaloneyFahanjournalistkilledSean Maloneylast_img
