Hamas Calls on Morocco to Reconsider Shimon Peress Visit Next Month

Rabat – Hamas called on Morocco to reconsider an expected visit by former Israeli President Shimon Peres to the kingdom next month.Israel’s former President is expected among attendees of the Clinton Global Initiative Middle East and Africa conference on May 5-7 in Marrakech. The Palestinian movement called on Morocco and all Arab countries to reject all forms of normalization with Israel. “We have hopes that the king and the government of Morocco will reconsider Peres’s visit to their country,” Hamas said in a statement carried by international news outlets.Hamas said that Peres’s visit would only make Israel look better in front of the rest of the world. It added that the visit would open the door for what it described as “perilous” normalization with the self-proclaimed Jewish State.Several Moroccan organizations are also mobilizing against the planned visit of the former Israeli President. The National Group for the Support of Palestine (le Groupement national de soutien à la Palestine) and the Democratic Network for Solidarity with the people (le Réseau démocratique de solidarité avec les peuples) have called on Moroccan authorities to prevent former Israeli President Shimon Peres from visiting the country. The high-profile conference is being organized by the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation.
