WATCH DRAKE ACCEPTS IN MY FEELINGS CHALLENGE WITH NEW MUSIC VIDEO

first_img Facebook Twitter Drake finally accepted the In My Feelings dance challenge when he dropped the song’s music video on Thursday. The Scorpion album track has reigned at number one in the global charts for the last three weeks and has become a worldwide phenomenon thanks, in part, to a viral dance challenge created for the song by social media personality and comedian Shoker, or Shiggy on Instagram. The music video sees Drake acting out parts of the famous dance sequence himself, which characteristically includes a number of perfectly timed moves performed alongside a moving car, and pursuing a romance with his love interest Keke, played by Power actress La La Anthony. Directed by Karena Evans, who also helmed the God’s Plan and Nice For What music videos, it has garnered nearly four million views in less than 24 hours.Set in New Orleans, the eight-minute video begins with the Hotline Bling singer professing his love for Keke on the front lawn of her house before being told to leave by her mother, whose comical role is played by The Cosby Show actress Phylicia Rashad. The man behind the meme also makes an appearance as Drake awakes at the end of the song believing it had all been a dream. Posing as the star’s personal assistant, Shiggy arrives at the star’s trailer and tries to chivvy him in a hilarious sketch about timing. The video concludes with a montage of fans and celebrities alike taking part in the dance challenge, including Millie Bobby Brown, DJ Khaled and Will Smith, the latter of which scaled the famous Chain Bridge in Budapest, Hungary, to take part in the challenge.Earlier this month, Shiggy and Drake met for the first time on the same night that In My Feelings hit number one, with the Canadian rapper thanking the funnyman for his role in the song’s success.Over half a million clips of people attempting the #InMyFeelingsChallenge have been posted on Instagram since Shoker shared a video of himself dancing in the street – or “doing the shiggy” – to the catchy track on June 29. Cameco shuts production for 10 months at 2 Saskatchewan sites 845 jobs

first_imgSASKATOON – Workers at two uranium facilities in northern Saskatchewan are facing tough times after Cameco announced Wednesday it was shutting down productions at the Sask. sites.Cameco (TSX:CCO) said 845 jobs would be “temporarily” lost by the end of January due to the shutdowns at Key Lake and McArthur River. The McArthur River site mines uranium ore and sends it to Key Lake for processing. The company said about 210 workers would be kept on at the facilities to ensure they maintained a safe shutdown mode. The suspension is expected to last 10 months, but more details are to be provided when fourth quarter results are released in February.Cameco cited market oversupply and low uranium prices as reasons for the production suspension. They noted prices have fallen over 70 per cent since an earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima, Japan devastated a nuclear facility in 2011.Operations at Rabbit Lake were suspended in April 2016, resulting in 500 job losses. The company announced third-quarter losses of $124 million on Oct. 27, one year after turning a profit of $142 million in the same time span.(CKOM)last_img read more

Good News Browns Your Chances Of Making The Playoffs Are 1 In

Jacksonville beats Indianapolis75–0.00144523 Minnesota beats Cincinnati77–0.00000000 Kansas City beats Denver66–0.00000000 12New England beats Miami90%–90.00000000% Cleveland beats Cincinnati16–0.72442626 Cincinnati beats Baltimore32–0.00000000 For a brief moment there on Sunday, the Cleveland Browns’ 2017 season appeared to be lost. The team was defeated by the Jacksonville Jaguars, moving its record to 0-10. Considering that no team has ever made the NFL playoffs with 10 losses, the result seemed to dash any remaining hope in Cleveland that the Browns would make a run.Or did it?It turns out, thanks to the assiduous investigations of a Redditor who goes by MrMolonLabe, the Browns are still in this thing: Provided that 46 different games go their way — including two ties — a hypothetical 6-10 Cleveland Browns can be the second AFC wild card team. It’s all rather simple. First, Cleveland wins out — that’s the easy part.1Minor note: The chance that the easy part actually happens is roughly 1 in 650 based on our projections for the rest of the Browns season. Then the Browns need the following: Week 12 wins from Kansas City, Tennessee, New England, Houston, Dallas and Carolina; Week 13 wins from New England, Denver, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Detroit and the Giants; Week 14 wins from Indianapolis, the Jets, Kansas City, New England, Chicago, Washington and San Francisco; Week 15 wins from Denver, Kansas City, Miami, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Minnesota and Dallas; Week 16 wins for Baltimore, Kansas City, San Diego, New England, Pittsburgh and Washington; and Week 17 wins for Kansas City, Indianapolis, New England and Cincinnati. Also, the Broncos and Raiders need to tie in Week 12, and the Bills and Dolphins need to tie in Week 17.If all this happens, there would be four AFC teams with a record of 5-10-1 and five more at 5-11. The Patriots, Steelers, Chiefs and Titans would win their respective divisions, and the Jaguars would get the first wild card at 12-4. That leaves the Ravens and Browns tied for the last spot at 6-10. The Browns would win the tiebreaker because their Week 15 win over Baltimore would split the season series, and Cleveland would have a better record in the division.Luckily, we happen to have forecasts for each of those games and can assign a probability for each of those discrete events based on each team’s current Elo rating.2The big assumption here is that the events are independent. Here’s how it shakes out: Pittsburgh beats Cincinnati66–0.00095385 Wash. beats L.A. Chargers39–0.00000036 Kansas City beats Oakland77–0.00000218 15New Orleans beats N.Y. Giants beats Oakland32–0.00002492 Some are trickier than others: Elo can’t tell us the probability that a given NFL game will end in a tie because most NFL games do not end in ties. For that, we’ll need a better estimate: There have been 5 ties since 2012 over 1,440 games played,3They changed the playoff rules again this year, which should make ties easier, but we haven’t had one since the change so we don’t have a good number for that. Regardless, this estimate is higher than the overall historical probability of ties. giving us a back-of-the-napkin probability of a specific game going to a tie as 0.35 percent, a rate of about 1 tie every 288 games.Let’s set aside Cleveland’s two needed ties for a moment. Multiplying the Elo probability that each game breaks the Browns’ way, we anticipate there is a 1 in 238,559,677,617,755 chance that they will get that sixth wild card slot. The probability of having two specific selected games tie is a 1 in 82,369 chance. Combining those two chances, we anticipate that the Cleveland Browns have a 1 in 19,649,922,085,696,900,000 — that is 19.6 quintillion — chance of making the playoffs.More to the point, the Browns have a probability of 32 percent to go 0-16 this year. Commentary A gift wrapped pass to the NFL for Terrelle Pryor

Ohio State has gift wrapped Terrelle Pryor’s going-away present in the form of a punishment. In the last couple of days Pryor’s journey to the NFL has hit a couple of speed bumps, with his eligibility to a supplemental draft coming into question. The letter of the rule states that a player may only enter a supplemental draft if their situation changes and they are not able to participate in the next season. Technically, between the deadline to declare for the draft in January and when Pryor left the university on June 8, his situation had not changed. Technically. When the draft deadline came, Pryor was suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season. At that time the “tat-5” scandal seemed to be under control. Everything was (relatively) normal. The Buckeyes had won the Sugar Bowl The Sugar Bowl was sucked into the black hole of the sporting world. And compliance problems with head coach Jim Tressel were non-existent. Pryor had a contract with the coach to remain on the Buckeye squad for the 2011 season in exchange to play in the Sugar Bowl for nothing. While inevitably Pryor still had his doubts about the season, he still had Tressel to fall back on. One thing that is clearly evident from the transcript of Tressel’s interview from the NCAA, it’s that Pryor and Tressel were very close. Pryor depended on the coach for more than just football related issues. When all hell broke loose on March 8, Tressel received a two-game suspension from the university. A suspension that a short time later was increased to a five-game suspension. After more and more of the scandal developed, it became clear that the season was not going to be what everyone had thought it was going to be. Then on May 30, Tressel resigned (read: retired) from the university. I think it’s safe to say Pryor’s situation had changed. Seemingly following Tressel step for step, Pryor was gone a week later to pursue an NFL career. He had planned to enter a supplemental draft. The rules for a supplemental draft changed after Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar used the supplemental draft to avoid being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. He was drafted by Cleveland in the supplemental, and since then, the rules for supplemental draft eligibility have tightened. The rule lists three reasons to let someone enter a supplemental draft: flunking out of school, graduating and deciding to leave and being kicked off the team. As of earlier today, Pryor did not meet any of these requirements, technically. Cleverly disguised as a punishment, the university did the best thing for Pryor to help him pursue his NFL dream. They sent him a letter on Tuesday banning him from all athletic facilities for five years, and declared him ineligible from intercollegiate play. The letter states that this decision was made due to his decision not to talk to NCAA investigators. “The University must declare you ineligible for intercollegiate competition,” the letter continued. “Due to your failure to cooperate, the University must also disassociate you from its athletic program for a period of five (5) years.” Sure, he won’t be able to come back to Columbus to workout at OSU’s gym in the off-season. But let’s be honest, why would Pryor ever come back to Columbus? Whether they will admit it or not, the university might as well have put a bow on that letter to Pryor, as that should be the last step for Pryor to get into the NFL. Thanks to OSU, expect Pryor to be eligible for a supplemental draft (whenever that may be). read more

Single and looking Ohio State mens tennis Blaz Rola in need of

A member of the Ohio State men’s tennis team is single and looking – for a new doubles partner, that is. Blaz Rola, a junior from Slovenia, wants to continue the streak of success he had last season into this year. The Buckeyes (8-1) entered the 2013 season coming off a record-setting 2012 campaign, when then-sophomore Rola and his then-senior doubles partner Chase Buchanan became the first tandem in collegiate men’s tennis history to capture three major national championship titles in a single season. The then-No. 1-seeded duo finished their season with a 36-4 overall record and a perfect 14-0 run in three major tournament victories – D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships, USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships and NCAA Championships. “(Blaz and Chase) were two guys who put a lot into their tennis game, and two guys who have a deep appreciation for OSU athletics. It was great to see those guys accomplish (tournament wins),” said coach Ty Tucker. Rola said the pair’s accomplishments stemmed from complementing one another’s games well. “I was more of a baseline game guy, staying in the back, and (Chase) was more with the quick hands on the net with the volleys. Our returns worked so well in doubles, and that’s what made us a great team,” Rola said. After the celebrations had died down and the trophies were placed in glass cases, the partners had to face a certain reality – Buchanan was graduating, and Rola was staying behind. Rola said that Buchanan, who graduated as one of OSU’s most decorated athletes ever, has gone on to join the United States Tennis Association professional national team in Florida. Buchanan did not provide comment despite multiple attempts to reach him. The OSU men’s tennis team has since been faced with the task of finding a new partner for Rola in the wake of the All-American talent it had in Buchanan. “To replace Chase is going to be really, really hard – almost impossible. I don’t think I can find someone that I had such a great chemistry with,” Rola said. “But I’m 100 percent sure that I can find, out of the (11) players we have, a partner that I have chemistry with.” Tucker said the team ensures its consistent play by learning a universal formation that translates to flexibility in pairing for doubles game. “We play the same doubles formation on all three courts. You’re going to lose people in college tennis to injury, and you’re going to lose people to graduation, so everyone has to be on the same page,” Tucker said. “We’ve been fortunate enough in doubles to win some points because all three courts play the same system and everyone is taught the same way.” Even as the team draws close to the middle of its season, Rola said he’s not yet found the new partner for him. “Changing partners for me at least is not such a big deal … I’ve played with (redshirt sophomore) Kevin (Metka) a couple matches, I’ve played with (redshirt sophomore) Hunter (Callahan) a couple practice sets, I’ve played with (senior) Connor Smith a couple practice sets. With everyone I’ve played with, it’s just been great … (But) I don’t have a specific partner,” Rola said. Smith, one of Rola’s doubles partners this year, said he has enjoyed helping the team out in doubles play so far. “(Chase’s) shoes are huge shoes to fill … so I’m not really trying to fill any shoes. I’m just doing my best to help out the team and get a point,” Smith said. Smith said the team aims to repeat its doubles win at the NCAA tournament this year. “(To win) is our whole goal. We go (to) a tournament to try and win it and bring something back for our season,” Smith said. Rola could not repeat his coveted three-peat from last year because he spent the fall playing tournaments in Europe. As the season continues, Tucker said he is willing to continue experimenting up until tournament time to find the right player combinations. “You’ve got to make sure that all three doubles spots have the best chance to win, and sometimes you have to split people up,” he said. The Buckeyes are set to continue tournament play on Friday at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle, Wash. read more

Klopp No chance Liverpool will pay Neymarsize transfer fee

first_imgLiverpool have spent a massive amount this year but they have no plans to match Neymar’s €222m price tag, says Jurgen KloppThe Brazilian superstar completed a shock world-record €222m transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain last summer in order to aid the French side’s hopes of landing a first Champions League crown.Meanwhile, Liverpool have spent a combined total of £163.98m on the likes of Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and goalkeeper Alisson this summer. The Reds were determined to bolster their squad in order to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season. But, unlike PSG, Klopp insists that Liverpool still have some control over their finances and won’t recklessly lavish out on any potential star recruits.“No chance, no chance, no chance,” replied the Liverpool boss, when asked of the club owners sanctioning a Neymar-like fee (via ESPN).“We are not owned by a state like it’s the case at two big clubs. We have our limits.”Roberto Firmino, LiverpoolVirgil van Dijk praises Roberto Firmino after Liverpool’s win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Virgil van Dijk hailed team-mate Roberto Firmino after coming off the bench to inspire Liverpool to a 3-1 comeback win against Newcastle United. On whether owners Fenway Sports Group would fulfil his every transfer wish, Klopp said: “No. We have a conservative leadership.”He added: “It feels like €100m back then is €500m today. When Neymar joined PSG for €222m, I shook myself.“Back then I had an opinion, but an incredible lot has happened since. In 2017, Neymar joined Paris, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele joined Barcelona for a lot of money, and Kylian Mbappe [joined] Paris.“This opened the whole thing, the money’s on the market. Now, if Liverpool wants a player, the other clubs want a bit of the cake too. That’s the story.“And you must also keep in mind that players like Mo Salah, Sadio Mane or Robert Firmino, players we bought for €30m to €40m, have a different value on the transfer market these days. That’s part of the business.”Liverpool signed  Virgil van Dijk for over £70m in January to make him the world’s most expensive defender, while Alisson briefly held the mantle of the most expensive goalkeeper before Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga for £71m.last_img read more

Inter made the correct decisions Spalleti

first_imgLuciano Spalletti is uncertain about Radja Nainggolan’s fitness against Torino but insists Inter Milan “made the right choices” in the defeat to Sassuolo.Spalleti’s side are considered favourites to challenge Juventus for the Scudetto, but they shockingly lost 1-0 to Sassuolo in their first league game.“We can look back and recognise some things we did better than others, but we remain convinced we made the right choices against Sassuolo,” said the Coach in his Press conference.“During the match, we lacked the unity and confidence we had last year during the fight for fourth place. For new elements of our approach to work, we must also rely on those tried and tested certainties.“I know my players and the way we train will sort everything out.”Meanwhile, Walter Mazzarri’s Torino were only beaten by a last-gasp Edin Dzeko volley in the 1-0 loss to Roma.“Toro always go out there with daggers drawn. We’ve got to do well to seek a victory, whether it’s pretty or not. We must be ready to go beyond the limits.Romelu Lukaku, Serie A, Inter MilanCapello calls Lukaku “a modern striker” Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 The former Italian manager believes Romelu Lukaku is perfectly suited for Antonio Conte’s Internazionale Milan in the Serie A.“This is a strong side, and it is, therefore, our duty to have a strong season. I don’t know if we’re the main challengers to Juve, as first, we must be the challengers to Roma and Napoli, seeing as they finished ahead of us last season.“If we just evaluate the Sassuolo match, we’re not the main challengers to anyone, as we have to do better. We’ve got to take the initiative and carry that belief to bring the result home. We are in debt with our fans, and they deserve more.”Mauro Icardi seemed isolated even when supported by Lautaro Martinez, Matteo Politano, and Kwadwo Asamoah.“He has always been a great hitman with precise characteristics, but he can do even better. In my view, if he drops deep to dialogue with his teammates, he’ll create more problems for the opposition defenders.”Radja Nainggolan missed the trip to Sassuolo with a muscular problem and could get his Inter debut tomorrow.“Nainggolan is in the squad, but we have to be wary because the supervision of the medical staff is crucial here. There are some risks, and we’ll decide what to do.“Milan Skriniar has recovered completely, and Keita Balde is at our disposal. We’ve got to keep a strong balance in the team.”last_img read more

We did not put our game out there,” he added.“We knew before the match what they [Leicester] came here to do.”“We know, because of how they respect us, how they will come here to play. China demands halt to US missile shield in S Korea

first_imgA terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor being launched from a THAAD battery located on Wake Island in the Pacific Ocean, during the Flight Test Operational (FTO)-02 Event 2a. AFP file photoChina demanded on Tuesday an immediate halt to a controversial US missile shield hours after Washington announced that the defence system was now operational in South Korea.Washington and Seoul agreed to the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery deployment in July in the wake of a string of North Korean missile tests. But its deployment has infuriated China, which fears it will weaken its own ballistic missile capabilities and says it upsets the regional security balance.“We oppose the deployment of the THAAD system in (South Korea) and urge relevant sides to immediately stop the deployment. We will firmly take necessary measures to uphold our interests,” foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press briefing. While Beijing lashed out at the shield’s deployment, the foreign ministry expressed support for US President Donald Trump’s surprise comments that he would be “honored” to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un under the right conditions.“If it would be appropriate for me to meet with him I would, absolutely. I would be honored to do it,” Trump said in an interview with Bloomberg.Asked about Trump’s remarks, Geng said that China “has always believed that dialogue and consultation… is the only realistic and viable way to achieve denuclearisation.”“We also said many times that the US and DPRK… should make political decisions at an early date, take action and show good faith so that we can create a better atmosphere for resuming the peace talks and settling the issue,” he added.Economic backlashEarlier, US Forces Korea said THAAD is “operational and has the ability to intercept North Korean missiles and defend the Republic.”A US defence official told AFP, however, that the system has only “reached initial intercept capability”.This initial capability will be augmented later this year as additional hardware and components arrive to complete the system, officials said. The THAAD system, which is being installed on a former golf course in the southern county of Seongju, is designed to intercept and destroy short- and medium-range ballistic missiles during their final phase of flight.Beijing has imposed a host of measures seen as economic retaliation against the South for the THAAD deployment, including a ban on tour groups.Retail conglomerate Lotte, which previously owned the golf course, has also been targeted, with 85 of its 99 stores in China shut down, while South Korea’s biggest automaker Hyundai Motor has said its Chinese sales have fallen sharply. The THAAD deployment comes as tension soars on the Korean peninsula following a series of missile launches by the North and warnings from the administration of US President Donald Trump that military action is an “option on the table.”Who should pay?Further complicating matters, Trump stunned Seoul last week when he suggested South Korea should pay for the $1 billion THAAD system.“I informed South Korea it would be appropriate if they paid. It’s a billion-dollar system,” Trump was quoted as saying in a published report.“It’s phenomenal, shoots missiles right out of the sky.”Seoul retorted that under the Status of Forces Agreement that governs the US military presence in the country, the South would provide the THAAD site and infrastructure while the US would pay to deploy and operate it.Thomas Karako, the director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, noted that South Korea’s sole THAAD battery does not quite have the range to cover the entire country. But he called it an important first step.“This is not about a having a perfect shield, this is about buying time and thereby contributing to the overall credibility of deterrence,” Karako told AFP.“South Korea with THAAD helps communicate to the North that today is not a good day to attack. It doesn’t mean that they could not do a lot of damage—they would—but it strengthens the overall posture.”last_img read more

Request for ICC probe in Rohingya crisis should be rejected Myanmar

first_imgMyanmar said Thursday that a request at the International Criminal Court to probe the mass deportation of Rohingya Muslims from the country was “meritless” and should be rejected. Some 700,000 Rohingya were violently expelled from their homes in Myanmar’s Rakhine state in a military crackdown that started almost a year ago after insurgents attacked border guard posts. The stateless minority fled to Bangladesh where they recounted widespread rape, murder and the burning of villages at the hands of security forces in operations the US and UN have called ethnic cleansing.Myanmar has vigorously denied that it orchestrated the campaign and said it was defending itself, but international pressure for accountability has mounted. In April the chief prosecutor at the ICC Fatou Bensouda took the unprecedented step of asking judges to consider whether the court could extend its jurisdiction to Myanmar, which is not a member state.A pre-trial chamber asked Myanmar to submit a formal response to the request by July 27, even though the Southeast Asian country has long maintained that it is not a party to the treaty that governs the court. The deadline passed but Myanmar went into more detail Thursday about why it did not respond formally, reiterating its previous position and claiming that the prosecutor relied on one-sided and biased sources. It also said it was unable to view submissions from Bangladesh and that the ICC had accepted briefs of “mostly charged narratives of harrowing personal tragedies calculated to place emotional pressure on the court”.Myanmar concluded that the request for a ruling on jurisdiction is “meritless and should be dismissed”.The statement said Myanmar had also established its own independent commission of inquiry though critics counter that the move falls into a pattern of creating investigative bodies that have no impact on addressing abuses.Bangladesh is a member of the Rome Statute underpinning the ICC and the prosecutor has argued that deportation is akin to a cross-border shooting. No decision has been made on the request but the legal thorniness surrounding it and the fact that a referral to the ICC at the Security Council could face pushback from China and Russia have raised doubts about whether it will proceed.Rights groups have said senior members of Myanmar’s security forces including commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing should be investigated, but so far the country has faced little real censure on the international stage except for targeted sanctions against a handful of military officials.Myanmar and Bangladesh signed a repatriation agreement but the deal has stalled amid fears from Rohingya refugees that they won’t be guaranteed safety and full rights. The Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship decades ago and cast as outsiders in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, with little freedom of movement or access to healthcare.last_img read more

Researchers devise broadbandwidth amplifier that ups gain by more than 10 db

first_img Citation: Researchers devise broad-bandwidth amplifier that ups gain by more than 10 db (2014, October 23) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2014-10-broad-bandwidth-amplifier-ups-gain-db.html Explore further © 2014 Phys.org (Phys.org) —A team of researchers with members from the University of California and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has developed an improvement to a broad-bandwidth amplifier that detects microwave photons allowing them to up the gain by more than 10 db. In their paper published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the team describes the idea behind their amplifier and how it might be used in future superconducting applications. Finnish team devise nanomechanical microwave amplifier with near least possible noise generation The purpose of the newly developed amplifier, like those before it, is to determine the state of a quantum bit in a superconducting device—it’s done by applying a microwave tone. A Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) is used inside to allow for using a very weak tone in the process. The JPA is actually an oscillating resonator that has a Josephson conductor. This arrangement allows researchers to read a qubit without destroying its state information, as it happens in real time, and in certain circumstances, to actually control it.The goal of the work by the team was to devise a way to overcome the problem of phase mismatch in JPAs so that they could achieve a higher gain over a broad bandwidth. They used a technique known as “resonant phase matching” to up the gain in their JPA—which was achieved by adding several resonating elements into the transmission line. The amplifier is part of an effort by researchers to read and control qubits in superconducting materials, which can involve measuring a single photon in a microwave signal. The result was a design for an amplifier that could be used to create a small device consisting of a transmission line that included subwavelength resonant inclusions that could achieve a gain of 20 dB, saturation power of −98  dBm and a bandwidth of 3 GHz.The Josephson junction type at the heart of the amplifier is typically made by placing an insulator between two superconducting materials. The JPA serves as an inductor serving in the role of a modulated parameter when it’s pumped by a microwave signal. The next step for the team will be creating a device that uses their new amplifier to perform actual measurements of qubits in a superconducting system, possibly taking measurements in a cryogenic broadband microwave application.center_img More information: Resonant Phase Matching of Josephson Junction Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers, Phys. On Arxiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/1406.2346ABSTRACTWe propose a technique to overcome phase mismatch in Josephson-junction traveling wave parametric amplifiers in order to achieve high gain over a broad bandwidth. Using “resonant phase matching,” we design a compact superconducting device consisting of a transmission line with subwavelength resonant inclusions that simultaneously achieves a gain of 20 dB, an instantaneous bandwidth of 3 GHz, and a saturation power of −98  dBm. Such an amplifier is well suited to cryogenic broadband microwave measurements such as the multiplexed readout of quantum coherent circuits based on superconducting, semiconducting, or nanomechanical elements, as well as traditional astronomical detectors. Want a Piece of the 33BandGrowing InternetofThings Market

first_img 5 min read Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. November 17, 2014 The Internet is set for another revolution, much like the smartphone explosion of the 2000s. This revolution, the “Internet of Things” (IoT), will connect physical devices, such as air conditioners, appliances and lights to the Internet. The IoT is generating particularly widespread interest due to its projected growth from $33 billion in 2013 to $71 billion in 2018. Like technology revolutions of the past, much of the market will be captured by new companies with innovative products.Related: The 7 Most Useful Smart Home DevicesWe see connected-living startups pop up almost daily, but there are a few things that truly set successful IoT startups apart. So, how can you position your business for IoT success? Here are our top five tips:1. Ensure your device tells a “story.”Your product needs to tell a clear story that can both stand alone and also work well with other services. Consumers need to understand what specific need this product will serve, in their language. The “connected lifestyle” is really a grouping of these individual stories — a novel — that work better together. However, average consumers rarely walk into Best Buy intending to purchase a full suite of connected products all at once. Instead, they focus on one need at a time. The best way to handle this? Make sure that your product’s initial value proposition is crystal clear. The Zen thermostat is a good example. Its initial use case was clear from the beginning: a simple thermostat that connects to the Internet. This clear value proposition coupled with the fact that setup was easy and the product already had an established team behind it (fact: Indiegogo campaigns run by two or more people raise 94 percent more money than campaigns by single individuals), made it a desirable and well-designed campaign from the gate — attracting both consumers and press.2. Plan your compatibility roadmap from day one. Customers don’t want to invest in dead-end technology. They may not even fully understand the concept of the IoT when they purchase a connected device, but consumers have begun learning the value of combining several IoT devices together to increase their overall usefulness. What many don’t know, though, is that multiple standards exist and that not all devices speak the same “language.” Thus, it’s critical that your product plays nicely with other devices and services.3. Mentorship is even more important than you think.Every connected product requires expertise in many different domains: hardware layout, standards interoperability, industrial design, distribution strategy and many more. Leveraging industry mentors will help you make the best product possible.Related: Why U.S. Innovation Needs China to Achieve the Next Technology Mega-TrendMentorships can come in many forms: guidance through a crowdsourcing campaign, assistance with radio frequency design, navigation through complex certifications, and advice on distribution channel selection. Look to companies such as platform providers, chip manufacturers and business partners for this mentorship. For example, you should know the difference between Zigbee and Z-Wave, and what each standard can offer in terms of distribution channels and strategic partnerships. Rather than relying solely on technical issues, startups should think through these types of implications to guide their connectivity decision. Mentors can help you navigate these multi-faceted issues.4. Have a plan for handling privacy, security and data from the beginning.Life is made better by sharing information, but as we share more and more data, you need to know how you’re going to protect it. Even technology goliaths have made privacy missteps, causing reduced consumer confidence and lower sales volumes. This is certainly another area where mentorship can lend a hand. Partners can also accelerate your time to market by providing robust, safe, proven infrastructures that your devices can leverage.5. Assume the person setting up your product knows little about technology. The average consumer will not take the time to learn about technology in order to use a new device. Customers purchase IoT devices to make their lives easier, not more complex, so it’s important to ensure you are catering to novices, not early adopters. One of the most critical things to simplify and streamline: the set up of your connected device. While it is most important to cater to the average consumer, technology enthusiasts are often early adopters. Since they fuel the early phases of your growth, it is also important to provide them with access to advanced configuration, customization and other features. Just don’t let those tech-focused features take center stage. The future awaits.Historically, upstart companies have had huge opportunities during similar technological upheavals such as the industrial revolution, the introduction of the Internet and the propagation of smartphones.Consider the histories of John Deere, Oracle and Google. All of these companies grew exponentially due to technological shifts like the one we’re seeing with the Internet of Things. Give your company the best opportunity to take advantage of this huge market expansion by keeping these tips in mind.Related: 5 Steps the ‘Smart’ Home Industry Must Take to Develop a Consumer Market Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Register Now » Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.last_img read more
