(Updated)Nearly 24 hours later and the manhunt is still on. New Brunswick RCMP continue to search for Justin Bourque, the 24-year old accused of gunning down three mounties and injuring two more. And he’s been able to avoid being captured or killed.Police are combing the north end of Moncton for any evidence of Bourque. Residents are still in lock down, urged to draw their curtains and call 911 if they see or hear anything suspicious. The man at the centre of the hunt is 24-year old Justin Bourque. A former Walmart employee who lives in a trailer park. A suspect photo shows him with two hunting rifles slung across his chest. Police say they spotted him a few times Thursday morning, but haven’t been able to apprehend him.His Facebook profile is active and paints a picture of a gun fanatic with an anti-authority edge. It includes pro-gun propaganda photos and posts criticizing police. His most recent post-death metal lyrics, to which one of his friends replied just hours later: “You knew this wasn’t the answer.”Police have asked residents to avoid posting investigation details online in case Bourque is tracking their whereabouts. They don’t want to give him any intel on the search. As they hunt for him there’s little time to mourn the loss of their colleagues.Marlene Snowman is with the RCMP: “Two that are undergoing surgery and three that have passed away. This is a difficult time for Moncton — and Codiac as a family.”Meanwhile, north Moncton residents who had to witness Wednesday night’s gunfire remain trapped in their homes — terrified that the man who fired these shots could be metres away.“In five minutes, I think there was 20 gun shots. It was terrifying.”“We saw the bullet go and hit a cop car and took out all the window in the cop cars.”The RCMP still hasn’t zeroed in on a specific area. They targeted a complex in downtown Moncton this afternoon, but backed off after finding nothing. The only good news to come out of today is that one of the two injured officers has been released from hospital.Related: Local police pay tribute to fallen mountiesSend your condolences to the RCMP

She’s also tried to paint Hudak as a weak leader who won’t stand up to his federal cousins to get the cash.Federal money isn’t the real problem, Hudak said. The governing Liberals have “dithered and delayed” instead of coming up with a plan to develop the massive chromite deposit.“They’ve neglected the north,” he said from an electronics store in London, Ont. “They’ve let that incredible investment fade away.”The Tories believe the Ring of Fire could create 4,400 jobs over eight years in the hard-hit region. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce estimates it could generate $9.4 billion in new economic activity over the next decade and support 5,500 jobs a year. It said it could also provide the federal, Ontario and municipal governments with almost $2 billion in revenue over that period and $6.7 billion over 32 years.“This can be for Ontario what the oilsands have been for Alberta, what potash has been for Saskatchewan,” Hudak said.“That’s what it can do for job creation in our province. The Liberals have spoiled that opportunity … I’d make it happen.”Wynne said the Tories haven’t recognized the amount of groundwork it requires, such as a negotiation framework reached with aboriginal communities earlier this year.“The work that we’ve been doing for the last couple of years has been to make sure that we have an agreement with the First Nations, that we have those fundamentals in place so that we can move forward in a way that will mean that everyone in the north, all of the communities, can benefit,” she said at a campaign stop in Waterloo. The lack of a transportation route has been a major barrier to developing the Ring of Fire — about 500 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay — which is believed to contain one of the largest chromite deposits in the world, a key ingredient in the making of stainless steel. The project suffered a major setback last November, when a big mining company that was going to pour $3 billion into the Ring of Fire suddenly pulled out.Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. suspended its operations indefinitely, saying it couldn’t keep spending money while the question of whether it would be able to build an all-weather road to the remote site remained in doubt.Noront Resources Ltd. (TSXV:NOT), which wants to develop its Eagle’s Nest and Blackbird mining projects, has praised the Liberals for offering $1 billion to build a route if the federal government matches the funds. The Harper Conservatives say it’s up to Ontario to apply for infrastructure funding under the new Building Canada fund, but the Liberals say the fund is insufficient because the province’s share, which is aimed at supporting all kinds of projects, is only $2.4 billion over 10 years.Hudak, who served as northern development and mines minister under the former Conservative government, said he’d also “combine the strengths” of the Ministry of Natural Resources with the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines to create one powerful northern minister. The Tories have also promised to repeal the Far North Act, saying it would open up the north to more investment opportunities and jobs.Tory officials said they have no date yet for a northern visit, but Hudak will visit the area during the campaign.— with files from Will Campbell
Back from a three-day fact finding trip to the east African country, John Ging, Director of the Operational Division at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told journalists in New York that food and security remains a key concern there. “Eighty per cent of the population depends on subsistence agriculture. The country is susceptible to harsh climatic conditions, especially what we saw with El Nino,” he said. He noted that half of all children under the age of five in Eritrea suffer from stunting, and 39 per cent are underweight. “We have to work very actively in that particular area to make sure we are addressing those who are suffering,” said Mr. Ging, noting an extensive programme to aid children in the country run by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).Among other concerns, he mentioned the need to lower infant mortality, to provide people with greater access to clean drinking water and to improve sanitation. Eritrea, which has a population of roughly 3.5 million, sits at number 179 out of 188 countries on the UN’s Human Development Index, which measures indicators such as life expectancy and education. The UN is assisting at nutritional feeding centres and health clinics, and has helped Eritrea achieve “a lot of progress” on the universal development goals. “I don’t want to overstate the progress – it is significant because it is on a positive trajectory – but we have a long way to go,” Mr. Ging said.He noted the “modest” appeal under way for $328 million over the next five years to sustain and build on these programmes. The previous programme was 83 per cent funded.“The momentum is there but there is a long way to go, so we have to give attention so it continues on that trajectory,” he reiterated.
Power and automation technology group ABB has won a new mine hoist order for LKAB’s Kiruna iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The new mine hoist, together with the modernisation of the following seven existing hoists will ensure high and safe production for another 20 years. As the first stage LKAB will install a new hoist, with the option to modernise the other seven existing hoists in its CA hoisting plant within the coming 8 to 10 years.“A hoist supplier with an integrated mechanical and electrical offering, plus ABB’s local presence for project execution experience and its strong service organisation are, among other things, the main reasons for LKAB choosing ABB as the hoist supplier to secure high and safe production”, says Tom Sterner, Project Manager LKAB. ABB’s scope of delivery includes mechanical equipment for the hoist plant and shafts, electrical and control equipment, construction, electrical installation, installation supervision, site management as well as commissioning. The CA hoisting plant, which is the main artery of LKAB’s production flow, is raising ore from the sub level (898 m) up to ground level. The purpose of the investment is to achieve high and reliable production for the coming 20 years. ABB has a long tradition of cooperation with LKAB dating back more than 60 years. The first hoist was delivered to LKAB in 1948. ABB has supplied all 12 production hoists to the Kiruna mine, five for the sub-vertical level and seven for the CA hoisting plant. “We are proud of being chosen by LKAB, the biggest iron ore supplier in Europe, thanks to ABB’s leading position as a complete hoist supplier in both mechanical and electrical parts and the long term good cooperation between ABB and LKAB over the years”, says Andreas Malmport, head of ABB’s Global Industrial Segment Underground Mining.
Credit: Electric Run IrelandOn 22 MARCH, Dublin’s RDS will play host to a 5k run with a difference. The first of its kind in Europe, the Electric Run combines the music and lighting of an “electric wonderland” with the healthy lifestyle promoted by running. We spoke to Angela Geraghty of Run Ireland, who are organising the event, about what people should expect on the night.Hi Angela. So what makes the Electric Run different to other 5ks?First of all, the props are designed by Disney technicians. Everytime you get to a stage in the run where you might be feeling a bit tired, there’s something else that will encourage you on because you’ll see another structure in front of you that is beautiful to look at.The music is also a big part of it. Upbeat dance music is played all the way along the route in different locations. Can you tell me a bit about how it got started?Electric Run is an American organisation. The guy that’s behind is Dan Hill. He set up this event called Ragnar and that snowballed so he decided to develop the Electric Run.He’s a young guy who is mad into sports and having a good time. He’s got a whole team of people around him now who are the same — highly motivated and all about having fun. They’ve taken the concept of the Electric Run all around America and then wanted to move into Europe. They asked Active, who are an American company, about finding a partner and they suggested Run Ireland. We’re proud that it will be the very first Electric Run in Europe.Credit: Electric Run IrelandSo it’s more about having fun than winning then? It’s not competitive at all. There are no chips or times recorded. The whole point of it is to get people to be more active by combining sport with a really good night out. It’s for all ages because you can walk, run or dance your way through the 5k.We expect that nobody will be bothered with their times as they’ll be stopping to take selfies as there are fantastic photo opportunities with the colours and props.Where will the course be situated? It uses every nook and cranny in the RDS. Part of it will be indoor, part will be outdoor and we’ll be running through the back of the stadium stand. When you’ve got structures like that with the lighting and all of the equipment and the props we can really make something effective out of that. A dark alley becomes a really magical lane full of light and sound. We’re trying to apply to every sense as you’re running through. What will runners meet at the finish line? There will be a DJ in the Main Hall in Simmonscourt so people can go in and party there for another hour or you can leave. We haven’t announced the DJ yet as they want to sell the event on the event and not the DJ. I believe they will have a very high profile DJ for London.YouTube credit: Electric RunHow much is registration?€38 each or €140 for a team of four. And do you get anything else for that? You get an Electric Run t-shirt, shutter shades, glow sticks, and we’ve got a guy called Stick Man who will be going around in a luminous outfit throwing freebies into the crowd all the time. Are runner encouraged to dress up?Absolutely they are encouraged to. There’s even a section on our website entitled: ‘What To Wear’.(That section reads: We invite you to bring your creativity, smile, laugh, and leave dull at home. It is the collective light and creativity of the thousands of participants that brings this event to life! You are coming to have fun and experience something magical. Look the part! If it is bright-coloured, blinks, shines, glows, or looks like something from another planet, it’s perfect! Put it on and come celebrate with us!)Will alcohol be sold on the night? The RDS are opening one of their bars but they are going to control that. And what do you say to people who might be thinking about taking drugs at the event? It’s very clear on our website that there is a zero tolerance policy to drugs. We’ll have quite a lot of security on the night and everyone will be checked going into the RDS. It’s the same policy as any other event. It’s a fun, clean, family-orientated event but at the same time I can imagine there will be a lot of teenagers and young people there as well.Credit: Electric Run IrelandThere are seven weeks until the big night. How is planning going? It’s going really well. The RDS have been brilliant. We have an awful lot of experience ourselves because we’re also the organisers of the Connemara Marathon. This is a cinch compared to that!We have partnered with Johnny Donnelly of Arcana Productions who was responsible for organising all the in-port stopovers for the Volvo Ocean Race. Then there’s Ray O’Connor who is the race director of the Connemara Marathon and also of Run Ireland so between the two of them they are accomplished. It will be a fun way to get runners’ partners, kids and friends who usually don’t go running, to try it and have fun. Maybe when they do it they might take up more serious events. What has demand been like so far? It has been brilliant. We’ve only advertised on Facebook so far and we’re nearly halfway there I terms of numbers registered. We’re expecting 7,000 on the night. We’ve got our TV campaign to start yet so we’re expecting it to sell out. It’s an amazing the power of Facebook because we have seen it go viral. To register and for more information, visit ElectricRun.ie or their Facebook pageStart getting excited about Ireland’s 16-year-old snowboarder Seamus O’ConnorThe new US Olympic bobsledding suits are insanely tight
A NEW BILL presented before the Dáil today is expected to pass into committee stage without a Dáil vote as the Government has indicated they will not be opposing it.The ‘Down Syndrome Equality of Access Bill 2013’ is being presented by Independent TD Finian McGrath and would mean that pupils with Down Syndrome in mainstream schools will be guaranteed resource teaching hours. There is considerable cross party support for the bill and the Government’s support will mean that it will proceed directly to the Third (Committee) Stage. At present not all children with Down Syndrome are guaranteed resource teaching hours if they go to mainstream schools.Down Syndrome Ireland estimate that about 30 per cent of children with Down Syndrome who attend mainstream schools don’t receive resource teaching .This is primarily because, under a 2005 circular from the Department of Education, Downs syndrome is not listed as being a “low incidence disability” and as such resource teaching hours were not guaranteed. The new bill being debated will therefore afford statutory recognition to Down syndrome as a ‘‘low incidence disorder’.Downs Syndrome Ireland argues that the disorder affects about 1 in every 500 births in Ireland and is less frequent than other forms of disability. At present they say that the provision of resource teaching is allocated on the basis of a psychological assessment.Read: Government “coming across as very anti-disability”, says mum >Read: Mothers granted leave to challenge law on resource hours for children with Down Syndrome >
If this isn’t a clear sign that we’ll be seeing the new iPhone 5 in the coming weeks, we don’t know what could make it more evident. Best Buy today began selling the Apple iPhone 3GS for zero dollars. That’s right, you can get an 8GB iPhone for free (with the standard 2-year contract, of course).Back in January, Apple dropped the price to $49, but we haven’t seen the phone for free until now. The deal is only available at Best Buy brick-and-mortar stores, so you’re going to have to leave the house to take advantage of it. We also don’t know exactly how many 3GS phones the company has in stock, so there’s a chance this model will be sold out by the time you get out of work and over to a local Best Buy store.Clearly, the 3GS is being “end-of-lifed,” which basically means that Apple wants to get rid of the old phones to make way for its new bouncing bundle of joy, the iPhone 5. It’s the old “out with the old, in with the new” all over again. True, if you’re dying to have an iPhone but can’t afford the $199 to $299 it’ll cost you for an iPhone 4 (and presumably the iPhone 5 will have the same list price) with a new 2-year contract, the free iPhone 3GS may be the way to go for you. However, in our opinion, the iPhone 3GS, which was released over two years ago, is really showing its age. The iPhone 3GS has a 480 x 320 resolution, just like the previous versions before it did. The iPhone 4 on the other hand has a 960 x 640 resolution, and the iPhone 5 is said to have a Retina Display as well. As for the processor in the iPhone 3GS, it has an 833 MHz CPU, whereas the iPhone 4 is a more recent 1GHz chip. Memory also doubled from 256 MB in the iPhone 3GS to 512 MB in the iPhone 4. The iPhone 3GS is missing the 3-axis gyroscope, dual-microphone noise suppression, and mircoSIM that the iPhone 4 has. As for the camera, the 3GS only has a 3-megapixel part, whereas the iPhone 4 offers a rear 5-megapixel camera and a front VGA camera. The iPhone 5 is said to have an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera. As you can see, the 3GS is rather outdated, and most of the comparisons above were with the iPhone 4, which will soon be outdated as well when the iPhone 5 is released. If you’ve waited this long to get an iPhone, we suggest you just buckle up and get the iPhone 5. If you just want a free AT&T phone and you don’t really care much about having the latest technology, this may be just what your’e looking for.via AllThingsD
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram In an online petition Effie Mourginos is calling on the Federal government to prioritise finances for the relief efforts for Queensland’s flood ravaged regions. “We respectfully seek that the Federal government put a temporary halt to providing overseas financial assistance to other countries at this point in time, by re-directing those funds into Queensland as a matter of urgency to assist the rescue efforts as determined by the consortium,” the petition states. Petitioners are calling on the Federal government to speed up and streamline the rebuilding process of basic infrastructure in the affected regions, but also to act swiftly in forming a taxpayer/flood victim/private enterprise consortium with the corporate insurers to ensure all claims are addressed equally. Petitioners also expect that people on low incomes, who have inadequately insured their devastated homes, are given immediate re-housing attention. GOLDENDALE — Nearly 650 firefighters battled a wildfire in the tinder-dry forests near Washington state’s Satus Pass on Saturday, as hundreds of residents awaited word on when they might be allowed to return home. The fire burning 20 miles north of the Columbia River and about 10 miles north of the city of Goldendale was 20 percent contained. The fire has burned more than 6 square miles but was holding steady at about 4,200 acres, fire incident spokesman Dale Warriner said. The blaze has burned 64 buildings. Fire officials have confirmed that nine of those structures are homes, but that number is expected to rise upon further investigation.About 200 homes remained evacuated Saturday, but Klickitat County Chief Criminal Deputy Pat Kaley said some residents might be allowed to return home later in the day.The fire started Wednesday along U.S. Highway 97 near a Greek Orthodox monastery. From there, it burned southeast of the highway through steep forested canyons and flat areas with dry grasses and thick stands of Ponderosa pines.

And the burning just didn’t stop. The question going in was simple: Was Dany about to become the Mad Queen, or was it all just a big swerve?Yeah, they answered that pretty definitively. Myanmar said Thursday that a request at the International Criminal Court to probe the mass deportation of Rohingya Muslims from the country was “meritless” and should be rejected. Some 700,000 Rohingya were violently expelled from their homes in Myanmar’s Rakhine state in a military crackdown that started almost a year ago after insurgents attacked border guard posts. The stateless minority fled to Bangladesh where they recounted widespread rape, murder and the burning of villages at the hands of security forces in operations the US and UN have called ethnic cleansing.Myanmar has vigorously denied that it orchestrated the campaign and said it was defending itself, but international pressure for accountability has mounted. In April the chief prosecutor at the ICC Fatou Bensouda took the unprecedented step of asking judges to consider whether the court could extend its jurisdiction to Myanmar, which is not a member state.A pre-trial chamber asked Myanmar to submit a formal response to the request by July 27, even though the Southeast Asian country has long maintained that it is not a party to the treaty that governs the court. The deadline passed but Myanmar went into more detail Thursday about why it did not respond formally, reiterating its previous position and claiming that the prosecutor relied on one-sided and biased sources. It also said it was unable to view submissions from Bangladesh and that the ICC had accepted briefs of “mostly charged narratives of harrowing personal tragedies calculated to place emotional pressure on the court”.Myanmar concluded that the request for a ruling on jurisdiction is “meritless and should be dismissed”.The statement said Myanmar had also established its own independent commission of inquiry though critics counter that the move falls into a pattern of creating investigative bodies that have no impact on addressing abuses.Bangladesh is a member of the Rome Statute underpinning the ICC and the prosecutor has argued that deportation is akin to a cross-border shooting. No decision has been made on the request but the legal thorniness surrounding it and the fact that a referral to the ICC at the Security Council could face pushback from China and Russia have raised doubts about whether it will proceed.Rights groups have said senior members of Myanmar’s security forces including commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing should be investigated, but so far the country has faced little real censure on the international stage except for targeted sanctions against a handful of military officials.Myanmar and Bangladesh signed a repatriation agreement but the deal has stalled amid fears from Rohingya refugees that they won’t be guaranteed safety and full rights. The Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship decades ago and cast as outsiders in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, with little freedom of movement or access to healthcare.

Photo: UNBThe helper of a bus reportedly tried to strangle a female student of Chittagong University (CU) on his moving vehicle in the city on Thursday when she was the lone passenger inside.A case was filed with Kotwali Police Station in this regard on Friday and police launched a drive to identify and arrest the bus helper and the driver, said officer-in-charge of the police station Mohammad Mohsin. He said the female CU student boarded the New Market-bound bus running on route-3 at Gate-1 of the university around 3:00pm on Thursday. All the passengers but the victim got down from the bus at Reazuddin Road around 4:30pm and the bus started moving towards Station Road changing its original route, the OC said.As the girl asked the driver to stop the bus out of fear, the bus helper rushed to her and tried to strangle her with her scarf, he said.Desperate to save herself, the girl hit the helper with her mobile phone, rushed to the door and jumped off the moving bus.Later, she returned home in a rickshaw with bruises all over her body.CU vice-chancellor Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury said he talked to Chittagong Metropolitan Police commissioner Mahbubur Rahman and urged him to arrest the bus driver and his helper.Besides, students formed a human chain on the campus on Friday demanding arrest of the culprits.
I know that headline may throw you off a little bit (or a lot), but it’s true. GameStop, the world’s biggest video game retailer, is partnering with Insomniac Games and is set to publish the developer’s next project, Song of the Deep. This non-traditional developer-publisher partnership came about after a conversation between Insomniac Games President and CEO Ted Price and GameStop executive Mark Stanley where each of the men discussed their plans and hopes for the future. Stanley talked about how GameStop was searching for new ways to engage with their customer base and Price discussed how Insomniac had an idea for a new game. After describing what Song of the Deep was all about to GameSpot, the project got rolling.“I think this will work because we’ve both been in the games industry for a long time,” said Ted Price in a press release. “There’s a lot of trust involved. They trust us to shepherd our creative vision and make the best possible game. That’s not always the case with traditional publisher-developer relationships.”Though GameStop is producing the title, Insomniac Games will retain complete ownership of the IP.Song of the Deep is a bit of a departure for Insomniac, as the title isn’t the type of big AAA game that the developer is known for. This will be a 2D side scroller in the vein of Metroid and Castlevania. Players will get to play as a girl named Merryn who goes on a journey to find her fisherman father who is lost somewhere in the depths of the ocean. She has to use a submarine to explore the abyss and battle all sorts of nasty underwater monsters. The game will be available digitally for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, but it will also be available physically exclusively at GameStop stores. Beyond the game, there will also be a children’s book from Sterling Publishing, and other merchandise related to the title.“It’s a big risk because a game like this at this level has never had this type of support at launch,” said Mark Stanley. “We don’t have unreasonable expectations that every gamer out there will want the game, the doll, the book, the T-shirt — everything. However, we feel it’s worth the investment to see how well it will do and be received.”GameSpot getting into game development may seem odd but given that the industry is moving more toward digital releases, the company has to find other venues to generate profit. Expect them to publish more games if Song of the Deep is successful. Expect the title to be released sometime this Spring.
Kolkata: The Central Himalayan zone that covers North Bengal (Darjeeling Hills) and Sikkim, has the highest faunal diversity in the entire Himalayan region. Altogether, 14,183 species of animals have been found in this region, out of a total of 30,377 species in the entire Indian Himalayas, which comprises East, Central and West Himalayas. The findings have been documented in a book titled Faunal Diversity of Indian Himalayas, which is the fruit of a collaborative effort of about 85 taxonomic/biodiversity experts of Zoological Survey of India, under the guidance and leadership of its present director, Dr Kailash Chandra. The book was released on April 26 by C K Mishra, Secretary of Ministry of Forest and Climate Change at Dehradun. The region has 27.6 percent of the total vertebrate fauna of the country. There are 133 species that have been reported to be threatened as per IUCN criteria, 84 species have been categorised as vulnerable, 35 as endangered and 14 others critically endangered. The complete name of the species and the details of the exact province from where it has been reported, have been included in the book that has as many as 52 chapters. The study has gone on for over a century, and the compilation work had started two years back. Apart from Chandra himself, scientists Devanshu Gupta, K C Gopi, Basudev Tripathy and Vikas Kumar were also involved in the compilation work.”This book will be the baseline data for future works on the faunal study of the Indian Himalayas and also for the conservation and management of the entire biodiversity in the Indian Himalayan region,” Chandra said. The book discusses the threats and conservation strategies and tries to find out gap areas in research of the fragile ecosystems of Himalayas, which is subjected to rapid deforestation, habitat degradation and climate change.
